The Art of Writing

Using Words for Function and Fun

Purpose: The purpose of this course is to equip students with the skills needed to use writing techniques in various formats that will enhance their productivity in life in both personal and professional manners.

Overview: Over the course of study, we will look at both fiction and nonfiction writing. The writing process will be emphasized at all levels. Elements of fiction will be discussed and practiced and students will practice using these elements in various creative pieces. Nonfiction sessions will focus on the most common formats that will be encountered in real life, including business letters, explanatory essays, and descriptive articles. Lessons will take a workshop approach in which students and teacher will share ideas, work both independently and cooperatively, and collaborate to edit and improve writing. Homework will be included so that students may practice their skills beyond the class lesson.

Materials: Students MUST bring a composition notebook dedicated SOLELY to this course and pen or pencil to class each week. The teacher will provide loose-leaf paper as needed. Writing tends to be a cumulative learning and creation process, and having a set notebook is important.

Lesson Schedule: It is important that students come to class focused and ready to accomplish as much as possible in the given time period. Our general timeline for each class will be as follows:

10:35 to 10:55 Review and Sharing from previous lesson

10:55 to 11:10 Instruction

11:10 to 11:30 Writers Workshop
